Automation – a challenge on the one hand and a driver of digitalisation on the other – is today also a central requirement in companies’ product development departments. High-speed innovation, shorter product development cycles and tougher competition are all forcing companies to continually improve their engineering efficiency. Vital automation potential can also be found in computer-aided design.
Making full use of automation potential in the CAD model
Today’s CAD software packages feature a high degree of functionality, and have reached an immense degree of maturity. Knowledge of how to fully exploit the potential of the tools optimal, of how to set up standards, or how to establish rule-based systems incorporating specific technical knowledge of the users (knowledge databases) and make them available across the company, is the basis for the creation of automation potential. Product templates or rules can be generated and saved in in-company libraries. This collective knowledge can be made available to the rest of the company without using any further software tools. Validation of design data and its effective collection and re-use are guaranteed. Designers are relieved of time-consuming routine tasks.
Generating automation potential via CAD plugins (external applications)
The integration of different software tools in the IT system landscape is one of the key challenges of automation. Only if CAD systems are thoroughly integrated in the product development process and able to interact with the tools used in the company can data continuity be guaranteed. All high-performance CAD systems, Catia, NX or Solidworks for instance, now have open development interfaces to implement additional CAD functions. What is missing are suitable methods and applications that will supplement the CA system according to user requirements, interconnect the tools, and therefore guarantee the necessary data continuity.
At Feynsinn, we help companies to identify and evaluate automation potential in the relevant CAx process. We help companies to make full use of the potential of the existing CAD systems, and develop methods and CAD applications for our customers to link authoring systems within the IT system landscape and improve their data continuity in the product development process. When doing so, we utilise neutral formats so as to ensure maximum flexibility in the generation and administration of the data, and focus on the Catia and Siemens NX CAD systems.
